Lisa: How are the southwestern pizza fingers?
Moe: Uh, they’re, um, “awesomely outrageous.”
– Bart Sells His Soul (The Simpsons Season 7 – Episode 4)
Didn’t have a lot to go on with this recipe, at least based on the description from the Uncle Moe’s Family Feedbag menu. Later in the episode, when Lisa is saying grace, this is what she’s eating:
It looks like the southwestern pizza fingers come with a lot of cheese. I decided to use some traditional southwestern American flavors and throw a bunch of cheese on top of it. Interestingly (to me anyway) “Bart Sells His Soul” is the episode right before Lisa becomes a vegetarian, so technically the pizza could include meat – since Lisa would not yet be opposed to eating it. But I decided to keep the pizza vegetarian on the chance that maybe the writers wrote this episode AFTER the vegetarian one and Lisa wouldn’t be eating meat, but then the episode got bumped BEFORE that episode and…am I thinking about this too much?
Anyway, I also made the dough from scratch because I wanted the pizza to be square for the correct “pizza finger” shape. If you don’t know how to make pizza dough it’s incredibly easy and I would highly recommend trying it.
- Pizza dough
- Black beans
- Shredded cheese
Shape your pizza dough into as square a shape as you can. This will be difficult because dough has a mind of its own. Spread the salsa on the dough to act as sauce. Next layer on beans, corn and jalapenos. Cover with lots of cheese. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until dough becomes crusty and cheese has melted.
I’m not sure if these quality as awesomely outrageous or not, but they were very tasty. Just like the Spaghetti and Moe-balls, I’m probably going to offend Italian people / Italian food lovers with this so-called “pizza”. However, I do feel this dish is authentic to Uncle Moe’s Family Feedbag and isn’t that what this whole blog is all about?
