Homer: I’d like a third helping, please.
Prison Cafeteria Worker: You do know the meat is made from diseased pigeons.
Homer: Just get the ladle down there deep. That’s where the beaks are.
– Donnie Fatso (The Simpsons Season 22 – Episode 9)
The Simpsons have featured some truly disgusting foods over the years, but I think this is one of the worst. It wouldn’t be that bad if it was ONLY diseased pigeon meat, I think what really grosses me out are the beaks and the fact that Homer wants a third helping of this stuff.
Of course, the Springfield prison system doesn’t have a stellar record when it comes to food options. In a totally different episode where Homer goes to prison he says:
Homer: This prison is a hellhole. They feed us horse meat, with traces of jockey meat!
– The Seven-Beer Snitch (The Simpsons Season 16- Episode 14)
But conversely when Marge goes to prison she seems to enjoy the food…or at the very least not having to prepare it. Either way, diseased pigeon mush reminds me of a controversial US prison food called Nutroloaf which “include a range of food, from vegetables, fruit, meat, and bread or other grains…blended and baked into a solid loaf.” Yum!
I truly hope I never have to experience what Nutroloaf or Diseased Pigeon Mush tastes like – so I’m not making that.
