Hush Puppies

TV Chef: Whisk the egg whites into the batter mixture with a very stiff rubber spatula. Now let’s look in on our hush puppies.

Besides the tv that Homer is using to watch the cooking show and the deep fryer he is using to make the hush puppies, there are also the following items in the car:

  • DVD player
  • Snow cone machine
  • Lite-Brite
  • Fog machine “even I think this is crazy”
  • Karaoke machine
  • Fax machine (I think?)
  • Heat lamp (for the deep fried foods)

Ironically, it’s not the fog machine that causes Homer to crash the car, so much as that he drives off a pier for some reason. Also, the only reason Homer realizes he’s going to drive off the pier is because the hush puppies he made were too hot to eat. So I decided to test out making hush puppies while driving around with a deep fryer (and fog machine) in my car!

…No. No I didn’t because, well, do I really need to give a list of reasons here?! I still made the hush puppies though.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 small onion

Directions:

Finely chop onion and set aside. Lightly beat egg and add buttermilk. Combine all dry ingredients and create a well to pour in the wet ingredients along with the onion. Mix until well combined – but do not over beat.

Heat oil of your choice to 350 F. Drop batches of batter into the oil depending on how big your fryer or pan is. Cook until golden brown. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel and salt immediately.

Note: Do NOT make this while driving.

Hush-Puppies

I don’t eat a lot of Southern US-style cooking, so I’m not super familiar with hush puppies. As far as I can tell, mine turned out as intended and they tasted pretty good. Perhaps they would have tasted better if I’d had a light bright with me at the time?
