“Breaking Bad” Blue Cupcakes

This is the first time I’ve done a recipe that comes from a Simpsons couch gag. Of course, I realize this cupcake actually plays a part in the episode (What Animated Women Want) as well. Still, I’m going to consider this my first “couch gag related recipe post”. However, I didn’t follow this recipe exactly the way Marge made it because she’s wrong, you’re wrong, the whole damn systems wrong!

…where was I? Oh yes, I’m not a baking expert but I know enough about cupcakes to say with confidence that you don’t need 10 eggs to make a single batch of cupcakes. In the couch gag, you can clearly see her crack egg, after egg, after egg, it’s taking up about a 1/3 of the bowl! That would absolutely create the most eggy, unpleasant cupcakes. And since we see them rising up nicely in the oven I’m going to assume the animators were going for the nice visual ascetics over baking accuracy.

Directions:

Cupcakes

Preheat oven to 350F and put liners in cupcake pan and set aside. Combine dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, salt and sugar) and combine wet ingredients (milk, oil, water, vanilla extract and lightly beaten eggs). Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat on high for 2-3 minutes until well combined. Slowly add in blue food coloring until cupcakes are the right shade of blue. Fill muffin tins with batter (no more than halfway full) and bake for 14-16 minutes.

Combine butter and powdered sugar and cream together until smooth. Next add vanilla extract and milk and (if needed) more powdered sugar until frosting reaches desired consistency. Slowly add in blue food coloring until cupcakes are the right shade of blue. Frost the cooled cupcakes and top with blue sprinkles.

In the non-couch gag part of the episode, Lisa and Milhouse are pseudo dating because he is being a jerk and Lisa finds this attractive and honestly it doesn’t really matter because he returns to his nerdy, pushover self by the end. Here’s a quote:

Milhouse: Lisa, I could be anyone for you. Except someone who’s mean to you. So, I’m just gonna cave in and give you the cupcake.
Lisa: I don’t know, it’s four days old. I just ate.
Milhouse: Who are you, the Queen of Siam? Just take the cupcake.
Lisa: Okay.

In my professional opinion (as someone who eats a lot of unhealthy food) fresh out of the oven or or four days old – these cupcakes were really good. I’d make them again, just not blue because…well you know what happens when you eat too much blue food coloring.

  1. You could take this opportunity to test some science. How well does a cupcake actually carry an electric current, as portrayed by Bart.
And I hope that when you wen’t to pick up a cupcake that you didn’t freeze up and collapse on the floor.

    1. I find most episodes that focus on Marge and Homer’s relationship to be very boring. We know they’re going to get back together! Most likely Homer will preform some grand gesture to win Marge back and they’re right back to where they started. Homer eating some sushi before Marge shouldn’t surprise her at all given that the man will quite literally eat anything.
